Letters in Appreciation
June 19,1998
To Harry Bass' family and wide circle of friends:
It is with sadness that I contribute a few words concerning Harry Bass, the man and
the numismatist. Having known Harry virtually since the time he became seriously
interested in numismatics, I have followed his progress, numismatic career, and achievements
as they have occurred. Today in 1998 we can all reflect upon the legacy this great
man has left behind.
As a numismatist, Harry was at once a connoisseur and a consummate scholar. As a
connoisseur he successfully endeavored to build a cabinet rich in specialties that
interested him most, notably United States gold coins and patterns. One eye watched
for quality, while the other eye, glued to a magnifying glass or a microscope, discerned
the minutest die differences and nuances. Along the way, Harry made a number of significant
discoveries.
His love for numismatic books was likewise well known. Not only did he gather an
important library but also he sought to share his knowledge with others through the
Harry W. Bass, Jr., Research Foundation, his associate Ed Deane, and other avenues.
Many times I have consulted the unique computer database he created listing important
articles and other citations. So far as I know, his public notices inviting qualified
scholars to examine coins held by the foundation are unique in the annals of numismatics
especially considering that Harry Bass was a person, not a museum, and not an organization.
It is remarkable that he and his staff could accomplish so much.
Equally important as the above are considerations of Harry Bass the warm, caring
human being, Harry was always willing to share knowledge, to help in any way
possible, and to spread the gifts he had. And, Harry never took part in criticizing
others or engaging in disputes. His character was of the highest order.
Harry Bass, the man, the numismatist, the pillar of numismatics the contributor to
the American Numismatic Society, and other areas that came under his watch -- we
are all fortunate for his having come our way.
Sincerely yours,
Q. David Bowers
