Dear Doris:
Just before receiving your note Ed Deane sent me a digest of Harry's life.
I feel I would like to write you a little more about Harry. Harry deeply affected
my life and that of many others who were not intimate personal friends but team friends.
ANS brought us together long ago and we watched each other work for a common goal
using ANS as a catalyst. Both of us were true coin and currency collectors and sincere
students of American numismatic literature. Harry saw as his goal the encouragement
of education of others by making numismatic data enticing and easily available. He
received great satisfaction in making the computer world serve these educational
needs. He recognized that possibility long before others. He saw great progress in
the plans he created. He fortunately led ANS at a time it needed modern leadership.
His generosity backed his intellectual support. All of us were fortunate that he
was able to continue it during his illness. I had the privilege of insisting that
he stay on at the ANS Council after he said he could no longer attend meetings.
Harry was always analyzing the best way to handle matters for future efficiency and
all of us appreciated the impact of his decisions. I will always hold him with the
highest respect and hope his principles and his dreams can be carried on.
Harry would not want a letter like this shown to anyone, but all of us can overrule
him on this point.
Carry on,
Eric P. Newman
