Dear Les,

The numismatic world has lost a great friend and supporter with the passing of Harry Wesley Bass, Jr. I understand that Mr. Bass had one of the finest collections of U.S. gold coins in the world. But he wasn't simply content to pursue his own collection, which was also one of the largest in the world. As you well know, he also served as president of the American Numismatic Society, in New York City, from 1978 to 1984.

Harry Bass also was a recognized authority on mintage of U.S. federal gold coinage; and, through the American Numismatic Society, he generously shared his knowledge, enthusiasm and talents.

Harry Wesley Bass Jr. will be missed by many. I too mourn his passing.

Sincerely,

Mary Ellen Withrow

Treasurer of the United States
