Obverse Design: Longacre's "Indian Princess" design, here seated to left, liberty pole and cap in right hand, left hand on globe, Western Hemisphere depicted on globe, ribbon on globe reads LIBERTY, LONGACRE in tiny letters near globe, furled flags behind Liberty, 13 stars around, date below.
Reverse Design:
Wreath of corn and cotton, 1 DOLLAR on two lines within wreath, STANDARD above.
Physical Description:
Intense slate gray highlights on the design motifs contrasts sharply with the bright mirror fields, forming a pleasing cameo effect.
Die Notes and Comments. Dies by James B. Longacre, and signed as such below Liberty on the obverse. One of several dies with Longacre's surname spelled out in full.
Provenance: Purchased from Abe Kosoff, August 14, 1971.
Narrative: James Barton Longacre's Indian Princess design—or at least a variation of her head—graced the obverse of the regular-issue gold dollars of 1856-1889, as well as the regular-issue $3 gold coinage of 1854-1889. Although Longacre died on January 1, 1869, his designs lived after him, and many pattern varieties were produced with his motifs, including the present issue.
