Longacre's new type with a small Indian Head design on the obverse and revised agricultural wreath on the reverse was introduced in 1854 for Philadelphia Mint issues. The following year saw examples struck at all operating facilities east of California, with 1856 only seeing production in San Francisco for this Type II gold dollar.
This New Orleans Mint issue was struck to the extent of 55,000 coins with only a handful of Mint State survivors.
