HBCC-1009, Breen-6141
1835 Classic Quarter Eagle
Type: Head of 1835
Denomination: $2.50
Mint: Philadelphia

Detail

This head style has the first curl, at upper left, much smaller than previous styles. Liberty's head is smaller than before. This was the final modification prepared by William Kneass, with Christian Gobrecht taking responsibility the next year.
This example is an extremely rare Proof, one of just four known for the date. One of these is part of the National Numismatic Collection housed in the Smithsonian Institution. Harry Bass acquired this coin from the Eliasberg Collection, the only complete collection of United States coinage ever formed.

Purchased 10/27/1982 from Bowers & Ruddy.
