The No Motto design type was produced from 1838 to 1866 with the second obverse, first introduced in 1839, featuring a modified Liberty Head combined with a refined reverse exhibiting smaller letters.
Only five or six Proof examples are known, and this is one of the finest. This issue is highly unusual for No Motto gold coinage in that the surviving Proof population is greater than for Mint-State coins.
