Mint Engraver Charles Barber modified the Saint-Gaudens design, providing much shallower relief and modified elements. These modifications were intended to facilitate striking and use in commerce, although some have suggested they were directly in response to Barber's jealousy of Saint-Gaudens. The motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, was not included, due to personal objections of President Roosevelt.
