This obverse has a defect in the final digit, leading some to describe this as an 1846/5-O overdate. Others believe this is simply a damaged logotype punch which was used to enter the entire date into the coinage die with a single punch. Regardless of its overdate status, this defect provides a clue to order of striking. This example has full details with the date defect prominent.
Liberty Seated half dollars of this date are known with an identical defect in the final digit, suggesting that a single four digit date logotype punch was used for both denominations.
