The Mint Act of 1792 required gold and silver coins to have a symbol emblematic of Liberty, with the inscription LIBERTY and date on one side, and on the other side an eagle with the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This design adhered strictly to the regulations specified by Congress. There was no requirement to include the denomination or other elements.
This lovely example is from a very early die state although the obverse is lacking minute detail due to die polishing. It is generally believed that about 100 examples are known today from a mintage of 897 coins.
