HBCC-3004, Breen-6115
1797 Quarter Eagle
Type: Draped Bust
Denomination: $2.50
Mint: Philadelphia

Detail

This is an outstanding example of this rare issue, one of just 427 minted. According to Mint records, quantities were delivered February 28, March 14, and June 29. The 16 obverse stars on the 1796-dated issue represented 16 states of the Union at that time. For this 1797 issue, the obverse star count was reduced to 13, representing the original states. Interestingly, the reverse continued to carry 16 stars.
This obverse has a light die crack from Y to the lower two stars on the right. Although this crack varies in intensity, none are known from a perfect die.

Purchased 08/25/1970 from RARCOA.
