This obverse Proof impression is identical to the final note, including the 1896 date. Serial numbers and treasury seal are lacking on this otherwise complete Proof. The engraving is sharp and clear, presenting the full beauty of this design. Engraving by Will Low and Charles Schlecht.
Artist Low was born in Albany, New York on May 31, 1853, and showed his engraving and artistic talents at an early age. German-born engraver Schlecht came to the United States with his parents in 1852, at the age of nine years. His apprenticeship with the American Banknote Company began in 1859.
