This transitional pattern issue provides an intriguing vehicle for further research involving all of the different transitional issues of this period. It was clearly struck over an existing silver dollar of another date, with the undertype attributed as 1866! Further examination suggests this may not be a correct diagnosis. The undertype is visible on top of the existing date digits, indicating Mint personnel were very careful to properly align the original coin in the dies. Other minor doubling may be seen on certain peripheral design elements, including the left obverse stars and UNITED.
